On the heritability of developmental stability

چکیده

Mo*ller and Thornhill (1997) assessed the heritability of developmental stability by a meta-analysis of all published (and some unpublished) heritability estimates of fluctuating asymmetry in bilateral traits. From a limited number of these studies they also calculated the additive genetic coefficient of variation (CVA). The usefulness of CVA is that it may correct for covariance between phenotypic variation and trait size (Houle, 1992). In eight out of the thirty-two studies that they reported, there was a statistically significant estimate of heritability. Twentyeight of these studies, representing fifteen species, were entered into a meta-analysis. From this analysis, Mo*ller and Thornhill (1997) concluded that there was a significant additive genetic component to development stability, but this component was relatively small. They also found that the CVA is approximately eight times larger for developmental stability than for trait size. In this manuscript I wish to highlight some of the benefits and limitations of this analysis, its implications and to suggest alternative approaches to the study of heritability of developmental stability that may prove useful.

Comparing the Developmental Genetics of Cognition and Personality over the Life Span.

Empirical studies of cognitive ability and personality have tended to operate in isolation of one another. We suggest that returning to a unified approach to considering the development of individual differences in both cognition and personality can enrich our understanding of human development. We draw on previous meta-analyses of longitudinal, behavior genetic studies of cognition and persona...

Heritability and genetic advance in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.)

The present study was carried out to estimate genetic variability parameters for some traits such as pods per plant, cell membrane stability, one thousand kernel weight, flowering period, grain filling period, chlorophyll content, relative water content, leaf excised water content, seed per pod and pod length, in 16 winter rapeseed genotypes. Statistical analysis showed significant differences ...

Genetic worth and stability of selection indices in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Improvement of one trait on its own will affect the performance of other traits because ofgenotypic correlations between traits. Index selection is one of the tools used by plant breedersto overcome this problem. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate selection indices developedfor improving grain yield in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Forty-nine rice genotypes were cultivated atTonekabon Rice Rese...

Genetic parameters of growth in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, at early rearing stage

The heritability response for growth of rainbow trout during early developmental stages was detected on the basis of full-sib and half-sib cross between the selected lines. The experiment was done in Shahid Bahonar Salmon Propagation Center, Kelardasht, Iran. Breeders were taken from the stocks maintained in this station. A bifactorial cross was done between two line using four randomly sire an...
